Shiniah is a student at Hampton University and an ambassador for the Society for Financial Education and Professional Development (SFEPD), where she shares financial literacy information with other students. She first learned about Working Credit during SFEPD’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. At the time, she knew her credit score was not where she wanted it to be.

Following the session, Shiniah connected with her credit building counselor, Derison, who helped her better understand how to use and manage her credit card. He also helped her address a collection account that did not belong on her credit report. With his guidance and her commitment to applying what she learned, Shiniah increased her credit score by about 120 points. She now feels more confident using credit and making choices that can help her continue building it.

For Shiniah, the experience has been empowering and life changing. She encourages other college students to ask questions, use the resources available to them, and start building a strong financial foundation early. “Just go for it,” she says. “This opportunity cannot hurt you. It can only help you.” In June, Shiniah became the newest member of Working Credit’s Participant Advisory Council, where she is sharing her perspective and helping strengthen the participant experience across the organization.
