When Vernell Jones talks about his journey with credit, you can tell this is more than just numbers—it’s about ownership, confidence, and being a trailblazer.

Vernell is a first-generation college student from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who is building his financial future one credit point at a time. A psychology major with a minor in sociology at Southern University, Vernell is proudly stepping into his senior year with more than academic goals in mind. Thanks to a partnership between Collegiate 100 and Working Credit, he was introduced to an opportunity that he seized, and it changed his relationship with money and with himself.

“I didn’t know about credit or any financial literacy, so I think that’s what kind of led me to Working Credit” Vernell shared. “When I met with my counselor, Ms. Judy, I had literally just applied for my first credit card days before that.” Vernell wasn’t sure how credit building worked but he was clear on one thing: “I always want to put myself in a position where I’ll always be able to have what I want”

The determination to have access to what Vernell desired and break barriers fueled his journey. Guided by Working Credit’s Senior Credit Build Counselor, Judy, Vernell has learned how to build credit responsibly, monitor his score, and avoid pitfalls like overapplying for credit. Vernell’s main takeaway from Judy? “Treat your credit like a relationship—nurture it, protect it, and don’t take shortcuts.”

In just a few months of being in the program, Vernell’s credit score has already climbed 11 points. “My goal is to reach 700 by the end of the program. I may not be buying a house or a car right now, but I want the freedom to make those choices when the time comes.”

More than numbers, the program gave Vernell confidence. “It’s truly empowering I believe to have someone guide you down a path that you know nothing about, and it gives you a sense of courage and peace. Instead of fearing credit, I’m embracing it. I begin to embrace it and have a true partnership with my credit and build a solid foundation that I pray can keep me going into my future.”

To other students unsure about joining, Vernell offers this advice: “Even if you think you already know a lot about credit, there’s always more to learn. The one-on-one support is a game-changer.” Having a credit building counselor was an important part of this experience for Vernell. “Someone who generally cared about my success means the world to me. So, it’s truly empowering. The program meets you where you are and it gives you the tools that you can use for a lifetime. Even if you think you already know a lot. There’s always more to learn.

Vernell is equipped more than ever not just for his last year in undergrad but in the life, he envisions for himself.
